UPDATED! - Iron Butt training ride 1

Event date:
Sat, 04/04/2026 - 5:30am

Thank you for signing up for the April 4, 2025 Iron Butt Practice Ride One.

This is a preparation ride for the First Annual (?) 3160 Iron Butt Ride on May 2, but you don’t have to do the May 2 ride to do this ride.  We will meet at the Chevron on Carefree Highway, just east of I17, go north through Flagstaff , then go east on I40 to Sanders, AZ, and then turn around and come back for an easy 521 mile out and back ride.
Meet up at 5:30 a.m. (yes, 5:30 a.m.)  Mandatory rider meeting at 5:45 a.m. and KSU at 6:00 a.m. for those who attended the rider meeting.  DO NOT FILL UP WITH GAS WHEN YOU ARRIVE.  We will fill up together as we leave.  If we leave at 6:00 a.m., we should be back around 4:00 p.m. If not earlier. I attach instructions on how to practice documenting your mileage for those who want to practice documenting miles for the Iron Butt Ride on May 2. (More below on that.)
There is a GPX file that can be downloaded directly to your bike or phone app. Attached below.  You can load this into the Harley Ride Planner (although it will not list the waypoints).  I also suggest you get MRA Routeplanner (https://www.myrouteapp.com) to create and view routes.  It is very easy to use and relatively inexpensive.  They may have a free version.  You can use this app on your computer and on your iPhone or iPad, and download routes directly from your phone to your bike.
There are just three stops on this ride.  The first and last are at the Chevron station on Carefree Highway.  The second and fourth are at the Little America Truck Stop, in Flagstaff, about 120 miles from the Chevron. The third and turn around stop is at the Speedway in Sanders, AZ, about 140 miles from the Flagstaff stop.  In other words, we go up to Flagstaff, get gas and log our mileage (see below), then go to Sanders, get gas, log mileage, and turn around and repeat to get to the Chevron again.  We will debrief at the conclusion of the ride at the Chevron.
About documentation:  If you are doing the Iron Butt ride on May 2, you will want to practice documenting your ride if you want an Iron Butt Certificate (see attachments for the guidelines, ride log and Iron Butt tips).  We will fill up with gas together at each gas station, beginning with the Chevron where we meet.  I suggest you download the attached trip log and put it in a large plastic baggie where you can keep it during the ride and also put receipts at gas stops.  You will take a picture on your phone of the gas receipt and of your odometer at each gas stop for documentation.
The speed limit on most of I17 and I40 is 75 mph.  I plan on setting my cruise control at 85 mph, which means we will actually be going about 82-83 mph.  We should not have any problems with traffic enforcement at that speed.  Let me know if you are uncomfortable at that speed.  For what it is worth, my ’24 Road Glide gets an actual mileage of about 35 mpg at that speed.
Vern can take phone calls and receive and respond to text messages while we ride.
